Their name is an acronym of Bangtan Sonyeondan, which translates to Bulletproof Boy Scouts in English. According to J-Hope, the band’s name signifies their desire “to block out stereotypes, criticisms, and expectations that aim on adolescents like bullets”. The band also announced, in July 2017, that BTS would also stand for “Beyond The Scene, and extended their name further to also mean “growing youth BTS who is going beyond the realities they are facing, and going forward.”
Although BTS was formed in 2010, they only debuted in 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment, and have gave a substantial following, having sold more than 20 million albums. This put BTS as the best-selling artist in South Korean history! The band also holds the record of best-selling album in South Korea with Map of the Soul: 7.
